Gossip: Matuidi, Ancelotti, Walcott

Chelsea to target Blaise Matuidi (with no evidence), Barca want Theo Walcott (which we don’t believe a word of), Liverpool contact Carlo (hmm) MATUIDI TO CHELSEA Chelsea could certainly do with a central midfielder, and the Daily Star claim that Paris St Germain’s Blaise Matuidi is that man. They believe that Matuidi is to be John Obi Mikel’s replacement at the Bridge, and not before time. Unfortunately, the whole thing seems to be based on the square root of very little. The Star report that the story is taken from tuttomercatoweb.com, but it only takes a little bit of investigation to realise what’s wrong there. A quick search on tuttomercatoweb reveals that their last story about Matuidi was on September 14. Ermmm?

Henderson breaks foot, faces two month lay-off

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson faces around two months out after suffering a broken foot in a ‘freak accident’ in training.
Henderson has been out injured since the victory over Bournemouth last month, and had traveled to America in order to help aid his recovery from a heel problem.

But the Reds captain has suffered a major setback after breaking his foot in an incident unrelated to said injury in training.
The 25-year-old now faces around two months on the sidelines after what the Daily Mail have described as a ‘freak accident’, with Henderson likely to undergo surgery on the broken bone in his right foot early next week.
Sir Alex Ferguson has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a “great, great kid” and a “serious professional” despite his tendency to stand in front of the mirror “loving himself”.
Ferguson – talking to the Daily Telegraph – clearly saw the Portuguese winger’s ego as a positive trait; it has certainly helped him become one of the best players in the world.

“You have to embrace it,” said Ferguson when asked about managing the egos of modern footballers. “Dealing with an ego doesn’t bother me. You used to see [Cristiano] Ronaldo standing in front of the mirror loving himself. But it was a nice vanity.

“The players used to throw jockstraps, boots and all sorts at him. It never bothered him one bit.

“They need to win, these guys: the ones that are cultivating their egos a little bit. You might see a player in a Ferrari and think – what’s he driving that for? But he has to live with that. He’s not going to be driving into town when he’s bottom of the league, or he’s been dropped. Some people can’t judge that. True players can.”

Wojciech Szczesny set to join Roma on loan from Arsenal

Sky sources reported last week that Arsenal and Roma were in talks over a deal and Szscesny took to social media to inform fans he is making the move, addressing viewers in a 10-second video. Speaking in Italian, he said on Sunday: "Good evening Giallorossi. I am very happy because I am going to Roma tomorrow. I’ll see you soon." Szczesny then signed off with a wink and an announcement on his future is expected at some point on Monday. The 25-year-old made his Arsenal debut in September 2009 and has made 180 appearances for the club in all competitions. He played 33 games for them and Poland last season but only appeared in FA Cup matches after a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Southampton on January 1. Szczesny was at fault for both goals at St Mary’s and was later fined and dropped for smoking in the dressing room, with David Ospina replacing him as No 1.

Ronny Deila admits Celtic must improve if they are qualify for Champions League

Ronny Deila admits his side must improve if they are to qualify for the Champions League after overcoming part-time Icelandic side Stjarnan in their second-round qualifier. The Hoops travelled to the tiny Samsungvollur stadium with a 2-0 advantage from last week's first leg in Glasgow but found themselves under some unexpected pressure after only six minutes when Olafur Karl Finsen shot the home side into a shock lead. However, midfielder Nir Bitton calmed the nerves when he levelled in the 32nd minute from a Stefan Johansen corner and further goals from defender Charlie Mulgrew, substitute Leigh Griffiths and Johansen made it 4-1 to see the Scottish champions through 6-1 on aggregate

Claudio Ranieri: Resurrection for Chelsea's 'dead man walking'

Claudio Ranieri's return to English football as Leicester City boss, 11 years after he became the first managerial casualty of the ruthless Roman Abramovich regime at Chelsea, was a shock to many and has certainly divided opinion. Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp reckoned the 63-year-old Italian - who famously embraced his 'dead man walking' tag towards the end of his reign at Chelsea - was fortunate to get a Premier League job in England. Ex-Leicester midfielder and pundit Robbie Savage described the appointment as a "bad choice", while BBC Sport's Gary Lineker - a former Foxes player and lifetime fan - simply tweeted "Really?" But many have also praised the work he did during four transitional years at Chelsea and his two-year spell with Monaco, and point to the experience he has gained while managing some of the biggest clubs in Europe. BBC Sport talks to pundits, experts and former players to gauge opinion about the 'Tinkerman's' second job in England's top flight. He was a bit of father figure. In general he was very thorough and at the time he was little bit of a novelty in English football. There weren't as many foreign coaches in the Premier League and I think some of his ways gave him a little bit of an advantage. "His communication skills weren't great because he couldn't speak the language. That was understandable but didn't help and everybody was basically living a little bit on edge whether they played well or not. That contributed to a lot of the players feeling a little bit insecure under him. "A lot of people will say that is good and it keeps people on their toes but if players play well they should know they will be in the team. "That type of tinkering was not really conducive to continuity and sometimes it came across that he had a few problems with the bigger players in the team if they didn't swim in the right direction. "He relied a lot on his coaches, who were very good. He let them do their stuff and would always oversee everything until it came down to the tactics when he really took on a hands-on role. "A lot of the time he relied on the translator so it was very tricky to give a Churchillian speech at half-time. He had his way of getting his way of getting his point across.

Christian Benteke: Liverpool sign £32.5m Aston Villa striker

Liverpool have completed the signing of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke for £32.5m. Benteke, 24, has agreed a long-term contract at Anfield and becomes their second most expensive signing. The Reds triggered a release clause in his contract to make him their seventh summer signing after selling Raheem Sterling to Manchester City for £49m. Belgium international Benteke scored 49 goals in 101 games for Villa after signing from Genk for £7m in 2012. He told the Liverpool website: "I'm very happy to be here. I came here to win trophies. I came here to reach some great goals with the team. "It was the right club for me because I had a good chat with the manager and I wanted to be part of his project." Liverpool's top transfers Liverpool struggled for goals last season following the £75m sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona and prolonged injury absences for England international Daniel Sturridge as they finished fifth in the Premier League. Signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert produced three league goals and, after acknowledging the lack of scoring last season, manager Brendan Rodgers has added Benteke to revive the Reds' attack. Liverpool have also signed forwards Danny Ings from Burnley and Brazil international Roberto Firmino from Hoffenheim, while Benteke's international team-mate Divock Origi has returned to the club after spending last season on loan at Lille. Benteke missed the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with an Achilles tendon injury but returned to action last October and scored 15 times to help Villa stay in the Premier League and reach the FA Cup final.
